Day 10

What a great day!  I was back at rehearsal today, and things went very well!  We started with an AEA meeting – my first one ever.  It was informative.  My somewhat embarrassing moment – the AEA representative asked if there was anyone in the room getting their equity card with this production, and I had to raise my hand.  But it was that awkward moment when you’re looking around for another hand only to find – ha – there isn’t one.  Cricket, cricket… my hand goes up.  The room clapped for me, people congratulated me after, and I got the usual joke of “now that I’m equity, I will be appointed deputy.”  Very funny…  Another friend said that he thought he heard the creak of my elbow as my arm went into the air.  Also, very funny…  Anyway, it was just another reminder that I feel so fortunate to be here.  After the meeting, we had a meet and greet, since the entire Detroit cast was together for the first time.  Meet and greets are always awkward, but it was okay.  We all introduced ourselves, and Kevin McCollum (producer) spoke, as did Walter Bobbie (director) and the head of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Theatricals.  We were also introduced to Irving Berlin’s youngest daughter.  It was nice.  The only sort of bad news that we received – the show will actually be closing on December 23rd, rather than the 28th.  But on the positive side, that might enable me to be home at Christmas.  We’ll see what happens – the news was just delivered today.  When you think about not having the final 5 performances, you start thinking about your paycheck, your equity weeks toward health insurance, etc.  It’s not just about missing 5 performances.  We were told Detroit is really having a hard time, and based on previous years, they want our final performances to be packed rather than trickling out after Christmas.  After the meetings, we went into vocal rehearsals, which were smooth.  However, I was transferred to a different vocal part today by Rob Berman himself.  No biggie; I’d rather be sandwiched in the middle – I love the “color” notes in pretty harmonies.  It’s all good.  I had lunch with Aaron (yes, he’s still in town), and then I headed back to rehearsal for more vocals.  We didn’t actually start dancing until 3:30 PM, which was nice.  But we got through “Let Yourself Go” spacing and learning everything.  It feels great – I am actually the point of the pyramid during one section.  I guess I better know what I’m doing… kidding!!  We started “I Love A Piano” spacing, and let me just say – it’s good to be on far stage right.  Come see the show – you’ll know why I say that.  But then, before we knew it, it was 6:00 PM.  We had to stop.  I made my notes so that I could remember what number I stand on and all that good stuff.  It can get overwhelming when you didn’t grow up using numbers for spacing.  I made my walk back to the apartment and got ready to snuggle in for the night.  It’s so cold everywhere you go…  I’m still icing the foot, taking Advil and taking it as easy as I can.  Aaron went and got dinner for us (while I separated the trash – yuck).  I am excited for tomorrow, as we have the first quintet rehearsal for this new vocal part that Rob wants me to do.  I hope it goes well.  I also have another shoe fitting at Capezio tomorrow.  Woo hoo!  By now, you know me and shoes!  I also got an updated track listing, and I am now the “Dreidle Girl.”  I’ll have to figure out what that is and let you know!
