Day 5

Well I made it – the end of boot camp!!  Man… I can’t tell you how much choreography there is in this show!!  Today, we got our positions and numbers for “Blue Skies,” and I am so excited (and a little nervous) – I’m down front!!  Okay, so maybe it’s because I’m shorter (hush Marla), but it’s still pretty cool.  I also landed my favorite section in the variations part (just three of us), so that’s really exciting.  Let’s see… we got just a few positions for “I Love A Piano” today, but not all of them.  I think that was it as far as getting specifics.  Luckily, we only had to put on taps for the last couple hours, because Randy Skinner came back to do some additional cleaning and reviewing.  It was nice to hear him give us his tips and body shape images; I can’t say enough how different (but refreshing) his work is.  Not only that, but how GREAT it feels as a dancer!  I love it.  Anyway, I had a couple great highlights from today: (1) I had a one-on-one session with Rob Berman, the supervising musical director of the show.  He asked me to be a part of the quintet that sings “The Best Things Happen While You’re Dancing.”  He said he thought of me for one of the two female vocals, asked how I was on sticking a part (if I can stick my part on the version of “Mr. Sandman” that I sang in TAFFETAS, I think I can handle this).  He was impressed that I sight read the part, so I think I’m good to go (as long as the choreographer is able to remove me from the waltz/partner dance).  It was nice. (2) Hold onto your hats, shoe fanatics.  I was in the most amazing dance shoe store ever!!!  I went for a shoe fitting at WorldTone, and OMG, the dude brings out 13 pairs of shoes.  If heaven is made up of my favorite things, then this was it.  The guy was apologizing for the time it was taking, and I’m thinking – WHAT?  Don’t apologize.  Not only did you get me out of rehearsal, but I have on my feet the most beautiful ballroom shoes I’ve ever seen in every style, color, strap design and decorative touches.  And what?  You actually want to know how they feel, and you are documenting whether I need another hole in the strap, and you are asking me if they hurt around the balls of my feet due to decorative strapping, and do I like the strap around the ankle or the foot better…  You mean someone cares?  AGH!!!  Anyway, if you know me well enough to know my love of shoes, then you know how special this 45 minutes was for me.  So after a long day of dancing (yes, we danced from 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM minus an hour for lunch), and another day with a swollen tendon, I am back in the apartment icing my foot.  It seems to be a trend…  A French Bread Pizza, cup of peaches and a milk later… I’m thinking bed time.  Oh – Aaron comes into town in the morning!!  I am SO excited!  Days off are now here.  Our next rehearsal is Thursday (I hope I can practice well enough to remember it all).  I have costume fittings on Monday and Wednesday, so I’ll be sure to keep you posted!
